That advice seems to make sense, doesn’t it?

Because if you do it, it will look like you’re in a good healthy posture..

And while a healthy upright posture is of course a good thing..

The idea that you need to consciously think of activating some muscles or tensing some muscles all the time, to pull yourself into a healthy upright posture, is a myth…

Let’s say maybe you’re having pain in your lower back, and maybe you also have this classic ‘Anterior Pelvic Tilt’ where your pelvis is tipped forward like this…

The common advice is that you should squeeze your abdominal muscles or squeeze your glutes…

So that you pelvis goes into the right position…

But here’s the problem…

While it may look like you’re now in a healthy posture from the outside, what’s going on inside could be even worse than before…

Because more often than not, the reason the pelvis was tilted in the first place was because of too much tension, or hypertension, in the lower back, or hip flexors, or hamstrings…

Meaning, most likely, you need to release the tension in those muscle groups, rather than flex your glutes or your abdominal muscles…

And you almost certainly do not need to go to the gym and build extra strength in your glutes or abdominal muscles…

The same goes for the neck and shoulders…

If your shoulders are rounded or slumped forward, or you have this “forward head” position…

That’s most likely because of too much tension in the chest and front of the shoulders…

So squeezing the muscles in your upper back, and between you shoulder blades might put you into what looks like a good posture,

But the root cause of the problem is still there…

In fact, now you’re worse off, because now you have tension in your back, as well as tension in your chest…

So here is your first clue about getting your body working:

If you have some postural problem, either in sitting or standing or during movement and so on, is a very high chance that you have too much tension in some muscles…

And if that is the case, then the way to improve is not to put extra tension into some other muscles… because that won’t do anything about the tension that caused the problem in the first place…

When most people discover they have tension in their muscles…

They usually start to think that they’re ‘doing something wrong’…

They’re correct about, but usually in the wrong way…

Because they start to think, I’m sitting in the ‘incorrect posture’ incorrectly, I’m standing in the ‘incorrect posture’… I’m ‘walking incorrectly’…

And so things like this happen:

Maybe you’re sitting in a chair and feeling pain in the pelvis or lower back… and you’re constantly shifting and adjusting, searching desperately for that position that feels comfortable…

Or maybe you’re standing, and feeling pain in the feet, or knees, or again the lower back, or anywhere else for that matter… then constantly shifting your weight from one foot to another, from heel to toe and back and forth… hoping you’ll find that ‘correct position’…

And one more example, in a movement, like maybe walking or running or swimming, and you feel pain at the same time during the movement as you repeat it…

And you’re thinking all the time how can you make some tiny adjustment to the movement that will soften the pain… as if you’re in search of the ‘correct’ or ‘perfect way’.

Any maybe during your life, you’re looking for people to emulate.. Copy anyone else’s posture or movement that seems ‘correct’… maybe looking on YouTube things like ‘correct way to stand’.

But unfortunately, that is a mistake.

Because such a ‘correct posture’ or ‘correct movement’ is not to be found…

And what I’m about to say next might sound like bad news, but don’t worry because the good news is coming…

Because no matter what position you go into, and no matter in which way you try to do some movement like walking or running or swimming, and so on…

As long as the excess tension is still in the muscles, your body will have a difficult time, maybe an impossible time doing any posture or movement, according to sound biomechanical principles.

Because when the root cause of the excess tension in your body is dealt with, your body will automatically align into a healthy posture, and it will automatically move smoothly and comfortably…

But until then… any posture or movement is happening under the condition of excess tension, which makes pretty much any posture of movement uncomfortable.

So let’s looks releasing that tension…

People generally think to try some of the following:

Anti inflammatory medication or painkillers

Remedial massage or other release techniques from professionals

Stretching – static, dynamic, ballistic, PNF, any type…

Trigger point release with maybe a tennis ball, a lacrosse ball, a theracane or some other device…

Maybe even medical approaches such as anti inflammatory medications, pain killers, injections (either steroid or blood injections) or maybe even surgery…

I’ve seen people try all of these approaches, and it is true that, in some cases, any of them can release tension, either partially or even sometimes totally restore mobility…

And that’s because these solutions are all using the same myth…

That is they’re all relying on the false idea, that if you have tension in your body, there’s something you can do directly to the body itself to release that tension…

Pay close attention to this part because it’s key to understanding the whole thing…

A muscle is not tense or tight simply of its own doing.

Each muscle of your body is controlled by your nervous system.

Your nervous system spreads out through your whole body, and guess where it starts..

You got it – your brain.

If a muscle is tense, it’s because your brain is telling that muscle to be tense.

And generally, it’s telling a muscle to be tense to compensate for an inability of your mind to consciously control your muscles…

Such as a lack of motor control, a lack of sensory awareness a lack of coordination, and so on…

And even if you feel like you’re able to do fairly complex movements just fine, like catching a ball, jumping around or climbing…

That is not the type of motor control and coordination I’m talking about…

I’m talking about subtle, subconscious movement patterns, which are not functioning correctly…

And again, when those subconscious movement patterns are not functioning properly…

Your mind will tend to hold certain muscles tense to compensate, just to hold you up and keep you together…

And that’s why the things I mentioned before, like medications, stretching, massage, injections or surgery, don’t generally work out…

Because even though they may temporarily, locally relieve some tension…

The incorrect functioning of subconscious movement patterns still exists…

And so long as they do, good mobility may be impossible, and stiffness, tightness, discomfort and pain will persist.

So now we’re getting very close…

And you know that the way to do this is to improve your subconscious movement patters… that is to say the way your brain consciously interacts with your body…

Well the next question of course is how do you do that?

Again, pay very close attention to this part…
